Announcement of the global proposal competition for Near-Earth Asteroid defense

Near-Earth Asteroids (NEAs) impacting on Earth has been a great hazard for long-term development of human, and been listed by the United Nations as the top one among 20 disasters. The research and engineering of NEA defense technology are important motivations for the development of scientific innovation, and also significant activities for promoting the community with a shared future of mankind in outer space.

The aim of this competition is to suggest the name and logo, as well as design proposals of the first and subsequent NEA defense missions of China. Reinforce the method of dealing with the threat of NEA impact, and motivate the technological development and project implementation.

We warmly welcome your active participation and band together to protect our planet. The notice is as follows:

1.Content of the Call

(1)Theme track I: Call for the name and logo of China's first Near-Earth Asteroid defense mission

(2)Theme track II: Call for the general proposal of the first mission

Design 3~5 times of the NEA defense mission for medium to long-term planning (2030~2045), form a planning and design scheme, and implement ‘impact accurately’, ‘push-off distinctly’ and ‘control exquisitely’.

(3)Theme track III: Call for subsequent mission planning

Participators should design 3-5 times of proposals for the NEA defense mission before 2045 to implement ‘impact accurately’, ‘push-off distinctly’ and ‘control exquisitely’.

2.Scope and Requirements of the Call

The call is open to the world, including but not limited to research institutes, companies, universities, professionals and amateurs in the field of aerospace. Cross-country, cross-organization and cross-professional teams are encouraged. Registration is open to individuals or groups, with a maximum of five participants per team in principle. Each participant is limited to join no more than two teams, and each participating institution is not limited to register just one team, but no more than three teams.

3.Schedule and Arrangement

The call is organized and implemented in four stages and eight sessions, with the following arrangements:

4.Awards

The competition sets a theme track award and an ultimate prize. First, second, third and merit prizes will be awarded for the themed track, while the ultimate prize will be awarded for the best title and logo, the best scheme design and the best planning idea.
